2021 Tasmania Vintage Report

2021 Tasmania Vintage Report

Vintage 2021 in Tasmania enjoyed an ideal growing season for producing excellent quality fruit.

The 2021 growing season was strongly influenced by the La Nina weather pattern, which in general produces cooler and slightly more humid conditions in Tasmania. We experienced good rainfall and cooler than average temperatures through spring and early summer. These conditions allowed the vines to receive all moisture required and moderated vine growth and yield. The second part of the vintage was mild and dry. There were fewer sunlight hours than average for the growing season, largely due to more rain days and calmer than usual wind conditions. The grapes ripened slowly over this period to develop complexities in flavour.

Mid-late vintage, however, brought a balmy Indian summer and with it, a hastened ripening and a flurried finish to harvest, all the while maintaining high acidity. Another vintage done and dusted in Tasmania, and our very first at our new Pontos Hills Winery for Jansz Tasmania. The quality of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay is exceptional from the 2021 vintage in Tasmania, and it will be a vintage to keep an eye out for in the coming years.
