Tasmania

Tasmania is unquestionably the nation’s premier sparkling wine region. The island’s pristine environment, cool climate and rich soils combine to create ideal growing conditions for naturally elegant, intensely flavoured and aromatic wines, with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir the region’s most renowned varieties.

While Tasmania’s first commercial vineyard plantings date back to 1865, most were short lived. There has been a resurgence since the late 1970s, and there is a real sense that this extraordinary winegrowing region is only just beginning to realise its full potential.

Pipers River - Northeastern Tasmania

The birthplace of Méthode Tasmanoise, where the Hill-Smith Family’s love affair with Tasmania began, and home to the Jansz Wine Room & Vineyard. This charming little part of the Tamar Valley is tucked away in the northeast corner of the island and colloquially known as ‘Sparkling Tasmania’. Being close to the Bass Strait, oceans breezes keep the region’s temperature slightly higher in the winter minimising frosts, and down in the summer, allowing grapes to ripen slowly, ensuring more intense, delicate and refined flavours. The pure, red, free-draining basalt soils provide the perfect places for vines to develop world-class fruit destined for Australia’s finest sparkling wines.

Our estate is home to a diverse range of endangered flora and native species including Tasmanian Devils, wallabies and echidnas. It is a prime example of our commitment to the environment, biodiversity and sustainability and our love for the island’s natural beauty.

Coal River Valley - Southeastern Tasmania

Home to our Pontos Hills Winery and Vineyard, the region is nestled between the Meehan Range, Pitt Water and Pontos Hills in the island’s southeast, just 30 minutes from the capital city of Hobart. The winery has been consciously designed and engineered to craft world-class sparkling wines with an emphasis on innovation and sustainability. The winery is not yet open to the public, but we are committed to developing the local wine and tourism industries and intend to create a visitor experience in our future. In the meantime, you can enjoy a beautiful curated tasting at our Jansz Tasmania Wine Room at Pipers River.
