The Details

Tasting Note Pale straw in colour with green hues. Intense classic lemon aromas, with a hint of white flowers. Bottle aged characters of toast, clove oil and lemongrass emerge and combine with the still fresh citrus and white flowers of its youth. The palate has great length and depth with concentrated power and fresh, pristine lime juice overlaid with toasted brioche, sage oil and lime marmalade.
Best Enjoyed With Enjoy with duck breast and five-spice glaze or tofu pad Thai with fresh lime wedges.
Treatment The Contours Riesling is crafted from old vines grown on the coolest slope within this ruggedly beautiful single vineyard. Bottle ageing for five years before release transforms this Riesling into a complex wine. More richness and complexity will develop over future decades.

Accolades

Wonderfully moreish
Bam! Riesling with a little age and the taste buds explode. Let it sit for a while and don't serve it too cold before watching it emerge gracefully. An excellent wine from Pewsey Vale celebrating 175 years. Toast, key lime pie, Bickfords lime cordial and a little lime pith. Wonderfully moreish, the acidity holds court and knocks all into shape. A lemony sherbet tang cuts in with a minerally drive keeping the tempo. This is excellent drinking now, but hold for a number of years and witness a beauty emerge - just like the 2012. Drink to ten years+

Graceful and generous
As is to be expected, it’s rather tightly coiled upon opening with pointy angles of acidity, nashi pear juice and a little sniff of kerosene. Once it’s settled down though (I gave it an hour), the show really begins. Minerals sparkle all over the roof of the mouth like it was the inside of a geode and the textures soften into quite the graceful and generous wine. You can taste honey melted with butter over white toast on the lips and salty oyster shell on the tip of the tongue. Crunchy lemon and lime boiled lollies stain the mid palate, a lick of crushed almonds and spice on the sides and back and up above, there’s a warming retronasal length – lemon tart just starting to bake.

Masterful winemaking
Pale colour. Classic developed lime, toasty aromas and flavours with hints of oilskin and sage. The palate is superbly balanced and in clockwork condition with attractive fruit complexity, underlying minerally notes, fine lacy textures, very good mid-palate viscosity and fine linear fresh acidity. A touch al-dente at the finish. A beautiful example of Eden Valley Riesling showing the fidelity of vineyard site and masterful winemaking. Drink now – 2034

Complete harmony
So vibrant for it’s age, this has great concentration of candied-lime and grapefruit-zest character. Terrific structure and energy on the driving palate, but all of this is wrapped in rich citrus fruit to create stunningly complete harmony. Very long and compact finish that suggests this has at least a further decade of aging potential. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Youthful despite bottle age
This aged release of 2016 Riesling The Contours is still somewhat youthful despite bottle age. It radiates with powerful honey, toast and preserved lemon aromas that provide an engaging opening. A solid bite from the acidity gives a good impact before settling into a more textural, creamy style. It will kick on for some time for fans of aged Riesling, but it is ready to go now.
